No — ceramic coating cannot remove scratches. It's a protective layer applied over paint, not a filler or polishing compound. Scratches must be removed by machine polishing (paint correction) BEFORE ceramic coating is applied. Applying ceramic over scratches locks them in permanently.

Ceramic Coating and Scratches — The Complete Explanation

Can Ceramic Coating Remove or Hide Scratches?

No. This is one of the most persistent myths about ceramic coating and it leads to significant customer disappointment when it's not addressed before booking. Ceramic coating is a transparent protective layer — it sits on top of your paint and takes on whatever surface it's applied to. If that surface has scratches, swirl marks, or oxidation, the ceramic coating seals them in permanently — and in many cases makes them more visible under direct light.

To remove scratches before ceramic coating, machine polishing (paint correction) is required. This is why our Premium and Ultimate packages include paint correction — removing the imperfections first, then sealing the corrected paint under ceramic for lasting results.

What About Micro-Scratches from Washing?

Ceramic coating's 9H hardness significantly reduces the formation of micro-scratches (swirl marks) from regular washing compared to unprotected paint. This is one of its real benefits — not removing existing scratches, but preventing new ones from forming as quickly.

Can Ceramic Coating Be Removed?

Yes, but not easily. Ceramic coating bonds chemically to paint and cannot be removed by regular washing, waxing, or standard paint cleaners. Removal requires one of three methods:

  • Machine polishing with a cutting compound: The most common method. A machine polisher with a cutting pad and abrasive compound removes the ceramic layer along with a tiny amount of clear coat. This is done carefully by professionals to avoid removing too much clear coat.
  • Chemical removal: Specific ceramic coating removers (such as Gyeon Cleanse) can strip ceramic coating chemically, though multiple applications are usually needed. More gentle on the clear coat than mechanical removal.
  • Professional wet sanding: For thick or poorly applied coatings, wet sanding by a professional removes the coating and levels the surface. More aggressive and should only be done by experienced detailers.

Why Would You Need to Remove Ceramic Coating?

  • The coating was poorly applied (high spots, hazing, uneven coverage)
  • The paint underneath needs significant correction that can't be done through the coating
  • Preparing for a full respray or body repair
  • The coating has reached the end of its useful life and a fresh application is planned

What Ceramic Coating CAN Do for Paint Imperfections

While it can't remove scratches, high-quality ceramic coating applied over correctly corrected paint will:

  • Make the corrected paint significantly more resistant to new swirl marks
  • Protect against UV fading that makes scratches more visible over time
  • Preserve the result of paint correction for years rather than months
  • Enhance paint depth and gloss, making the overall appearance more impressive

Related Questions

I have a scratch on my ceramic coated car — what do I do? +
For deep scratches (down to primer or metal): the scratch needs conventional paint repair (touch-up or respray), then the ceramic in that area can be reapplied. For light scratches in the clear coat: a professional detailer can carefully machine polish the affected area, removing the coating locally, and then reapply ceramic to that panel.
Does ceramic coating hide orange peel? +
No — ceramic coating makes orange peel (the texture in factory paint from spray application) more visible, not less. Orange peel removal requires wet sanding and polishing before coating. This is typically only done on fresh paint jobs or prestige vehicles.
Will my ceramic coating scratch if I brush against it? +
Light contact (brushing against it with clothing) won't typically scratch a quality ceramic coating at 9H hardness. Sharp objects, keys, and abrasive contact will still scratch — ceramic coating is not a force field, it's a hardened protective layer with real but finite limits.
